Massage Therapy in Tacoma WA

Many individuals have questions about massage therapy prior to their first appointment at Proctor Chiropractic. Here are the answers to a few of the most common questions we receive.

What is massage therapy?

Massage therapy is a form of bodywork. It involves kneading the skin, muscles, ligaments and soft tissues of the body to reduce stress, increase circulation, release lactic acid and improve healing times. The two most common types of massage are Swedish and Sports. Swedish massages are very relaxing. Sports massages involve using firm pressure to relieve stress after workouts, reduce overall body pain and to help heal various sports injuries.

What should I expect during my session with your massage therapist?

At the beginning of your session, our massage therapist will ask you about any specific pain you might be having, any current or old injuries and any areas that you would like specifically massaged.

Our massage therapist will leave the room while you undress and make yourself comfortable on the massage table. Most individuals opt to leave their undergarments on.

Lotion will be applied to your skin to decrease the friction between your skin and our massage therapist’s hands. If you requested special attention to certain areas, our massage therapist will spend the majority of the session massaging those areas.

What are the benefits of massages?

Massages are great for promoting physical and mental relaxation. As your muscles are kneaded, they will slowly start to relax, and tight spots will be alleviated. Blood flow and oxygenation will increase throughout your body, which helps to promote healing of old and new injuries.

Will receiving regular massage help my back pain?

You should notice a decrease in your back pain both during and after the massage. This is especially true if your back pain is caused by over-exercised or sore muscles.

What should I do if I think my massage is too intense or not intense enough?

If your massage is too intense or painful, you should immediately tell our massage therapist so that the pressure can be adjusted to a more comfortable level. Conversely, if you feel the massage is not deep enough, you should tell our massage therapist. We will always perform your massage in a way that is comfortable and effective for you.

Can I combine chiropractic care with my massages?

You can absolutely combine chiropractic care with your massages. It is most beneficial to schedule your chiropractic treatment after your massage. Since massage relaxes the muscles, ligaments, tendons and soft tissues, the chiropractic adjustment will be more comfortable and more effective after your massage session.

Are the benefits of massage therapy cumulative?

The benefits received from massage therapy are cumulative. At each successive session, our massage therapist will be able to knead away more of the tight spots and knots in your muscles. This will further improve your flexibility and range of motion and reduce your pain.
